Here at Puget Sound Studios we have embraced the DSD/SACD technology and have added multi-channel DVD mastering and authoring also. We provide authoring for all HD-DVD formats. To retain the highest quality possible, we encourage all our clients to record and mix to the highest resolution digital format available. Stereo mix-down media should be 24 bit PCM at sample rates up to 384 kHz or DSD.
Direct Stream Digital/Super Audio CD
Puget Sound Studios is the only studio in Washington to offer DSD/DXD recording, editing, mastering and authoring. DSD is the name used by Sony/Phillips for their system that uses pulse-density modulation encoding to store audio signals on an SA-CD. Where a CD uses wave files, DSD/SA-CD technology can be proprietary or “Hybrid” utilizing a layered configuration of SA-CD 5.1/stereo and CD stereo material.
DSD offers the highest audio quality available whether recorded in 2.8MHz or double-rate 5.6MHz sampling rates. Now that the Tascam DV-RA1000HD and the Korg MR-1000/MR-1 have come down to consumer level prices, these 2-track units offer mixing engineers unparalleled performance for mix-down and archiving. Even when using the available sample-rate converters DiscWelder Bronze and Korg’s AudioGate, DSD to PCM conversions still sound better than RedBook CD’s recorded at 16/44.1

DVD-Audio
DVD-A is a high-rez PCM digital format that competes directly with DSD/SACD. DVD-A does not include video and should not be confused with DVD video. DVD-Audio offers users many possible storage solutions; most notably 5.1 surround and stereo recorded at 24/96, though other configurations and sample rates can be used.
